Target Audiences for films

For research on the creation of my own target audience I have revalued the films that I looked at for the influences of my opening sequences. These films included the confessions of a shopaholic, the holiday and the vow; so for these I will create blog posts on each of the films target audience. I will evaluate who they attract, looking at why and how they do this.

Film Audience Research

Film Audience Research

A Film audience is simply the type of people who are going to watch the film and these is visible for every film. However, although the view is mostly watched by the targeted audience most definitely you also get people outside of the target audience range who also view the film.
A films visual interpretation attracts its targets audience because of the way the producers have made the film 'look'. Colours and in particularly the name of the film will be targeted at different types of audiences. For example, Romantic Films are aimed at women in particular and especially young teenage girls with the idea of bright, happy colours; however in comparison an action film is targeted specifically at men because of the stereotypical fighting and deaths that occur within them.
Categorizing a film bases the film on the stereotypical factors of that certain type of people, however the film industry will include factors that attract different audiences in to widen their audience amount.

For example, The film 'LOLs' advertisement shows Miley Cyrus centralised immediately saying she is a main role within the film. This film therefore is already targeting Hannah Montana viewers as well as Disney viewers in general, this therefore will be targeting young girls in particular. We can also tell its target audience is girls due to the use of the colour pink, stereotypically linking a colour to a specific gender.
Another Example of a target audience shown in the way the film looks is Flight Plan a drama film.  The look and colours are very sophisticated  making it obvious this film is not for young children. The use of dark colours makes the film modern, but however this film does not drawn in a particular gender audience.

Chosen Log-Line

Chosen Log-line

As a group for our log-line we have decided to go with idea 4. Although this piece was the longest sentence we found it the most effective.
We also questioned our peers for their thought and emotions on each idea and to vote for their favourite log line. In all we only asked around 15 but mostly the thoughts were that 1 and 3 weren't exciting enough however the favourites were idea 2 and 4.
More than half agreed on idea 4 being their favourite and as a group we voted this as our favourite as well. This is therefore the last blog of my film's treatment with the decided log-line printed below.

"Stockholm Syndrome is a character-driven romantic drama about a most wanted criminal who captures a young innocent girl, as well as capturing her life he captures her heart. As they begin a dramatic romance together."

Evaluation of each Idea

My personal evaluation of the Log-line ideas we came up with

Idea 1
The first idea we created is short and concise. However I feel as if it doesn't involve or tell much of the story-line as a whole and sounds more like a 25 word pitch rather than a log-line. Although it does create excitement as it create 2 different kinds of characters which a unlikely to fall in love making the audience want to find out why they do infact fall in love if they are so different. However this idea was not my favorite and it is most probably because it was our first idea also.

Idea 2
The second idea we came up with was a step forward in terms of its excitement and power compared to our first idea. It introduces the films title within it so people can associate with it. The story is more or less told concisely and specifically. The reinforcement of falling in love for me creates a sense of excitement and character journeys.

Idea 3
The third idea we came up with was another quiet short and concise idea. It introduces the characters in more depth however doesn't do this in a wordy or boring way. The characters are pictured as different and interesting. The ending of the piece I find effective however a little too cliche. However it leaves the audience to want to find out who this person is in which he falls in love with and why she is so 'unexpected'.

Idea 4
Finally we have idea 4. This too me is very powerful as it targets the target audience of a romantic drama by the straight away point of what genre the film is of. The sentence also directs the film's title again letting the audience have an insight into the films story-line. The log-line in my opinion also tells the story concisely and creates an enjoyable feel to the film with the introduction to a "dramatic romance".

Log-line ideas

After discussion we came up with 4 possibilities for the Log-line that will sell our film. The creation of these were reinforced by the research I had done earlier so I was able to create good powerful ideas to later choose one from.

Analysis of a film Log-line

In the creation and thought process of our own log-line I thought that looking at an example of another films would be very useful, picking out what they do and why it is effective. This will therefore help us when we put together our own because we have the knowledge now of what makes it good and bad as well as what works well.

Final Logo Design Evaluation

Final Logo Design

As part of the decision on what logo we thought was the most effective we asked around 20 people on their opinions asking them to tell us which one they think would work best for acting as our company logo. 80 percent of the people agreed on design 1, whereas the other 20% went on design four.

As a group however, we have decided upon allocating the first design as our company logo, we all agreed on it being the most appropriate for the companies advertisement. We also all stated it as our favorite amongst the others and this was backed up with the percentage of people that also preferred this when we asked them. The logo is probably the most likely to be memorable and stands out from all the other designs for its difference in shape and style. From this logo especially it is identifiable as a film industry logo because of the use of a clapper board, for which audiences will associate with film and media.

Analysis of each design

Analysing each one of my designs

Following on from my last blog post and the designs for our production company i have analysed the pros and cons for each design. The reference to each design in the recording reference my last blog post with each design numbered.

Production Logo

Our own production company

As a group we have decided that we shall create our own production company to produce our film. We have decided upon calling the company 'FMB Productions' as a collaboration of the starting initials of each of our team members involved in the making of this film. This therefore gives the company a personal attachment to us and sounds professional as well as unique.

We have designed a range of different logos for our company so we can co-operate this into our title sequence, because from observing film openings the big production company involved is created at the beginning alongside a showing of their main logo.

Film company's logo moodboard

Film logo mood-board

After looking at some mainstream brand and company logos I then decided to look into more depth at some Film industry logos. At first I was not going to because I had the fear of making logos too similar to them, but when I researched they were nothing close or like my ideas. The film companies although do tend to include their names the actual design reflects the company's name if they reflect a particular image such as 'DreamWorks'. Therefore this reinforced my thoughts for our group to create unique logos unlike the ones on the market for film industries already to portray a more excitable, fresh tone to our company.

Logo Moodboard

Logo Mood-board

To secure my knowledge on what makes a good and bad logo I created a mood board of logos from all sorts of company's and institutions.

By looking at these I noticed an obvious trend for logos to have a circle shape to them as a number of the ones I could see on Google where based in circles. Therefore, in my opinion I think our company logo needs to not be a circle to be unique and original enough to then stand out from the crowd within the market and be remember-able by the public. My of the logos have either the name of their company on it or some kind of symbol that relates to their company name, this is something my group will also have to take into consideration for when designing our own company logo.

Blockbuster Style Opening

Production Context

Within the making of my film i need to consider what production company I would like to use to make my film. I decide between whether I am wanting it to be a Independent Film Company, a Blockbuster Company or the creation of our own production company.

Final Word Pitch Decision

Final 25 Word Pitch

Evaluation of Why we have chosen to go with this 25 Word Pitch:These 25 words some up the film roughly without giving the story-line away too much and this is why we felt it sold the film title the most. The reference to Georgia as 'young' creates empathy for her and targets our young woman audience range. Both characters are addressed in the pitch so introduces them in separate ways with Ben being known as a 'criminal' hinting at the dramatic side of the film. Both names are both modern so show to the audience that the film is to be set in modern day times. The 'emotional' link that it says they both go through suggests the romantic side to the film and therefore attracts our target audience of teenagers/girls etc. The word 'surprisingly' also I think impacts greatly upon the audience because it suggests there is many dramatic and unexpected events that happen within the film making it sound much more exciting and adventurous to watch, this therefore widens our audience range to adventurous viewers.

Evaluation of initial 25 Word Pitch's

Evaluation on Initial 25 Word Pitch Ideas

  • "Everyone wants Ben Samuels locked away but he's ruining a young woman's life. However, this captive symbolises his weakness as they undergo an emotional journey." - Analysis of Idea 1: This first 25 Word Pitch idea isn't all that short and snappy because of some of the longer words such as 'symbolizes'. However, the introduction to woman as young creates sympathy straight away for her as the audience would begin to perceive her as very innocent because of the idea of youth. This also directly appeals to girls as a target audience. The story is summed up by the reference to the woman being a captive so they are enabled to understand he ruins her life by capturing her. The ending of the pitch 'they undergo an emotional journey together' is appealing to our target audience because it follows the idea of an emotional romantic drama. The main character is introduced and the pitch tells a basic story-line for the film.
  • "Stockholm Syndrome could be diagnosed when a past criminal keeps an innocent girl captive. Together they undergo an emotional journey together." - Analysis of idea 2: The films name is used within this pitch to introduce the film to it's audience and portray a basic outline for the story. Again the description of the girl as 'innocent' creates empathy for her and the way she is not addressed to with a character name leaves her as a mystery. The reference to her as a girl is attracting our younger teenage girl audience members also.
  • "Ben escapes the media to hide away and capture a young woman, together they had no idea they'd begin a roller-coaster of an emotional journey together" - Analysis of idea 3: The main character is addressed at the very start of the pitch. The reference to the media could relate to the dramatic side of the film therefore targeting that specific side of the target audience. The pitch gives a basic outline of the film without revealing too much of the story itself.
  • "When Georgia's life gets bombarded by a wanted criminal, she had no idea that her life would be changed for good" -Analysis of idea 4: This fourth pitch idea is one of my favorites because it is short, snappy and straight to the point and in my opinion sells the story. It attracts viewers because it tells them straight away that her life is changed leaving the audience to want to know why. The reference to 'her life' suggests almost a dramatic genre to the film as well as the reference to a 'criminal'.
  • "Young Georgia's life gets bombarded by criminal B.Samuels, she herself had no idea of the emotional trouble this would cause her, and surprisingly neither did he" -Analysis of Idea 5: This particular idea of a word pitch introduces both main characters suggesting a romantic side to the film already, attracting romantically interested audience members. The reference to Georgia as young creates empathy for her and attracts our younger teenage girl target audience. The word 'surprisingly' also hints that the film has lots of twist and climaxes within it, which I think creates a greater impact on the pitch rather than 'they undergo an emotional journey together' because it creates a dramatic feel to the piece; hinting that nothing will go smoothly for either characters.

Introduction to Characters

Introduction to characters

I have put together a range of comic panels which introduce the 5 main characters within our film. Each panel has a picture of a cartoon character which could present the type of person we would like to cast as each character. Beside each character is a short speech bubble where they introduce themselves with who they are and what they play within the film.

Further Treatment

1. Working Title

"STOCKHOLM SYNDROME"

Stockholm Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy, sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors. It is sometimes seen as a form of traumatic bonding, where strong emotional ties and develop between two people; where one person harasses, beats, threates, absuses or intimidates the other. When a victim believes the same values as the aggressor, they no longer become a threat. Therefore, as a group we have decided upon calling our film 'Stockholm Syndrome' to reflect the overall story line of the film.

Evaluation

Why did we choose a romantic drama?

As a group we decided upon creating a romantic drama due to the audience types it will draw in, by mixing a romance storyline with a dramatic middle. This will widen the audience because people who enjoy both genres will take interest in the film. After doing some mood boards and research we also understood of the colours and storylines to use which would be could to recreate.

Out of your three ideas which idea have you decided upon developing further into the opening sequence?

Idea three is the idea in which we are going to proceed with. This is because the other two pieces we felt weren't original enough and on the market already there is a lot that follow similar story lines. Again we found that the car crash was over taking the main story line and there was no real reason to create a dramatic conflict within the middle of the films, each of the first 2 ideas also sounded very unrealistic and because we wanted the car crash to occur within our opening sequence we agreed that this would be very hard and could go ethier way with how effective the piece could be.
Therefore, we have decided upon creating and developing idea 3 where the man keeps the woman hostage. This is because our other ideas where getting too technical and confusing, and where as this final idea can be made to a good standard with the equipment avaliable to us to use to do so.

Initial Ideas

Initial Ideas

As a group we have decided upon creating a romantic drama. After creating several mood boards and researching the meaning behind a romantic drama film we were able to create some overall film ideas for our project.
Overall we came up with three full film ideas that made sense and would attract a varied audience. In the presentation below is our ideas, fulling explained with a beginning, middle and an end.
